Chinese Braised Tofu Recipe – A Delicious and Healthy Dish

Braised tofu is a classic Chinese dish, known for its rich flavors and crispy yet tender texture. To make this recipe, start by frying the tofu until golden and crispy, then braise it in a savory soy-based sauce that brings out salty, sweet, and umami notes. The tofu absorbs the flavors beautifully while remaining moist inside. For a healthier twist, try air-frying the tofu or incorporating vegetables like bell peppers or bok choy. This dish pairs well with Dan Dan Noodles for a complete Chinese dinner. For more tasty ideas, visit our Sesame Oil Chicken Soup recipe!

Health Benefits of Tofu

Tofu is an excellent source of plant-based protein and low in calories, making it a great option for those looking for healthy, vegetarian meals. It’s rich in calcium and iron and offers essential amino acids.

Ingredients

  • Tofu (firm)
  • Soy sauce
  • Chinese cooking wine
  • Sugar
  • Ginger
  • Garlic
  • Spring onions
  • Five-spice powder

Instructions

  1. Prepare the tofu: Cut the firm tofu into bite-sized pieces and pat dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.
  2. Marinate: In a bowl, mix soy sauce, Chinese cooking wine, five-spice powder, sugar, and minced garlic. Add tofu pieces to the marinade, making sure they are coated evenly. Let it marinate for 15 minutes
  3. Sear the tofu: Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Sear tofu on all sides until golden brown. Remove and set aside.
  4. Create the sauce: In the same pan, add ginger and garlic, sauté for a minute. Pour in the remaining marinade, add a bit of water, and bring it to a simmer.
  5. Braise the tofu: Return the tofu to the pan and simmer on low for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to absorb. Garnish with chopped spring onions.

  • 1 tbsp rice wine
  • 150 ml water

  2. 2. Then add a glass of water(150ml), mix the soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sugar.

  3. 3. Finally, add the rice wine and let the sauce be dried and this delicious tofu is finished.

Recipe Notes

When frying the tofu, add slightly more oil, and slowly fry until it is over medium heat.

When using the spatula to turn the tofu, try to use “push” to avoid breaking the tofu.

Add a little sugar and stir fry to make the finished product look more oily and the sauce color is more obvious.

Tofu can be replaced with water tofu and plate tofu.
